Social Cities of Tomorrow

I have just returned from the Social Cities of Tomorrow 3-day workshop and 1-day conference in Amsterdam. The catch cry for the week was “how can we make cities more social, not only more technical?”.

Revealed by snow and ice

Recently I rediscovered a series of photos I took around Oslo last winter. It was one of the coldest winter in quite some time. Yet again we are in the middle of the season of snow-covered roofs and glacial streets. The photos reminded me how Oslo is truly a bi-seasonal city.

Noticing the city

Last week I put on a Systems/Layers walkshop on networked urbanism, to remind us all to look more up and down and to notice and question the manifestations of the network and it’s cultural implications.

FutureEverything 2011

In May I was lucky enough to be YOUrban’s envoy to the FutureEverything festival and conference in Manchester. After three busy days of workshops, talks, concerts and exhibitions, I returned to Oslo with new perspectives on themes such as open data, rapid prototyping and festivals as method for user-led innovation.

Cognitive Cities conference

In February Einar and I attended the Cognitive Cities conference in Berlin. The spring-sun-soaked Berlin offered a lovely frame for a weekend dedicated to the ins and outs of the networked city. This post is a brief summary of some of the talks and general themes of the conference.

Making ‘Immaterials: Light painting WiFi’

It has been very exiting to see how our film ‘Immaterials: Light Painting WiFi‘ has being linked to and discussed across a broad range of audiences, disciplines and fields of research, including urbanism, technology, architecture, advertising and art.
